Celebrating Day of the Dead

Halloween is starting to permeate many countries around the world. For instance, last week when I was in Paris, the chocolate shops were embracing the holiday full on! But for my money, the Day of the Dead (or Dia de los Muertos) Mexican tradition on November 1 is much more amazing and picturesque. In this video, you'll find a great last-minute tutorial on how to make up your face like a traditional "sugar skull," a great way to celebrate both Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

One of the Di de los Muertos customs is to decorate your home with an altar dedicated to departed loved ones. It's not a morbid custom; the skulls do represent death of course, but the colors and sugary substance of the confectionary skulls represent the sweetness of life, so it's a celebratory mix. This video shows you some of the ways you can decorate craft skulls to celebrate.

And from the same crafter, here's her step-by-step demonstration video on making Dia de los Muertos charm bracelets.

Finally, don't be surprised to see the Day of the Dead theme creeping into weddings, too! Here is a themed wedding cake, complete with skeleton cake toppers. Click here to visit the Etsy store where you can purchase the cake toppers.

Nettie Kent Video Interview: Following Jewelry Design Dreams

Many of our Sheffield School students in Jewelry Design are pursuing their creative dreams while working fulltime. Imagine my delight when I came across the following video interview of New Yorker Nettie Kent, who talks about how she pursued her goal of designing her own jewelry while working three other jobs - and her delight when she was able to leave all three! Nettie shows off her work space, which I also thought tied in perfectly with a new article we just posted in Designer Monthly on setting up your work space to maximize creativity; read Carve Your Niche: Create a Creative Work Space for Jewelry Design.

Interior Design Video - Brian Kane, Furniture Designer

As a school, Sheffield reaches creative people who want to become more professional about their creativity - as a better hobbyist or as a serious professional. I was really drawn to today's video because it does such a thorough job of documenting a creative professional's design process. San Francisco furniture designer Brian Kane takes us from initial sketches to full-scale renderings to computer drawings and on to prototypes. The process is hypnotic, as he takes some ideas for a chair through to a finished product; and we see other examples of his popular work.

Wedding Video - The Essentials of Planning a Great Event

It's abundantly evident from the following video by Virginia photographer, videographer Josh Gooden that he covered a wonderful event. First off, Gooden's eye for framing, pacing, composition, and storytelling produced a lovely wedding video keepsake that Sara and George, the happy couple, will cherish for a lifetime. Second, the event is at a spectacular natural setting, River Farm, and between breaktaking wild flowers and lovely event spaces, it was an excellent venue choice. Earlier in the video, we see beautiful wedding invitations and wedding printing, there are table settings for the reception that tie in the wildflower theme from the outdoors ceremony, the venue is decorated beautifully, the processional flowers are delightful, the food is presented in a chic way - in short, the key elements that a good wedding planner should take care of are evident in this particular wedding.
