DIY Wedding Project: Make Your Own Bridal Veil

Materials

Fabric Tulle
Beads/Gems
Comb
Feathers
White Thread, Sewing Needle
Fabric Glue (that dries clear)

Cost

$20 for one veil

A friend named Nicole discovered while planning her September 2008 wedding in Sonoma, that pretty veils, clips, and combs can be more expensive than you expect. She loves making jewelry for friends so decided she was up for the challenge of creating her own veil. And she was nice enough to let Jillian of the popular wedding blog 100 Layer Cake come over one Sunday to watch her recreate her veil for those of you considering a project like this.

How To, from Nicole:

First, I have to preface by saying there is no right or wrong way to do this project. It’s all about your preference how long or short you want to make your veil.

Step 1: Gather the materials and lay them out. You’ll want to cut the tulle in a few different sizes. This way you can play to see what combinations you like best.

Step 2: Once you have the combination you like, gather the tulle in a bunch on the comb so you can stitch the two parts together. Make sure it’s stitched tight. Play with the tulle to make sure it’s falling nicely across your face.

Wedding DIY Project - Feather-Topped Drink Stirrers

If you're thinking of great wedding and event planning inspiration for this summer or early fall, look no further than 100 Layer Cake - one of our favorite wedding and event blogs. They cover a variety of weddings and feature top wedding vendors, from the best photographers to the best florists. The folks at "the Cake" are serious about helping you create special accessories to make a special day even more special. We found this do-it-yourself project that added a great touch for very little money and effort.

We did this cute little DIY project for our Boho Summer Party shoot  – yummy feather-topped drink stirrers! Such a fun addition to any girly, festive occasion. Bridal showers, baby parties, dinner parties, and obviously weddings!

Materials

Feathers - varying colors and sizes, bamboo skewers, gold trim, glue gun

Firstly – assemble your supplies. If you’re purchasing your own supplies, gather a bunch of feathers (in different colors and sizes), a handful of bamboo skewers, and whatever trim you’d like to use to finish them off. We used gold, because we love gold. But you could totally use anything you like.

You can make a bunch of the exact same stirrer, or you can make all sorts of different ones that go together, like we did. Purchase feather sizes and shapes that vary, and figure out which go together best.

How to Make Do-It-Yourself Hand-Dyed Wedding Napkins

If you're thinking of great wedding inspiration for the coming spring/summer season, look no further than 100 Layer Cake - one of our favorite wedding blogs. They cover a variety of weddings and feature top wedding vendors, from the best photographers to the best florists. We thought you'd like to see this fun wedding craft. It's by Rachel, and you really need to pop over to Rachel’s blog. Here's how she describes her nifty DIY idea.

This project is so beautiful and REALLY relevant to any one of us with a crafty heart. You could make these to use around the house, for a special holiday dinner party, for a bridal shower, a festive brunch, for gifts ... the list goes on. All the pretty photos and projects make good inspiration for life, not just weddings.

We decided to rent the plainest, cheapest white tablecloths possible for our long dining tables. And since we weren’t having lots of fresh flowers or pretty place settings, we knew we’d want to use the napkins to add some color. The side benefit was that we got to have cotton napkins, which I love – they're actually absorbent, unlike the standard polyester ones you can rent from most places.

Napkins are easy enough to sew, but all that hemming is time consuming so I decided to start with pre-made napkins. If you’re having a smaller wedding, you could definitely save some money by making your own. Just start super early.

We wanted a striped look, but as we started playing with the process we found that we really loved the striped tie-dye effect we came up with. Have several extra napkins on hand so that you can experiment. Folding the napkins in different positions will give you stripes in different places and you’ll want to test your dye intensity and rinsing and drying procedures – all of these factors impact your final product.
