Student Postcard...Claudia Klug

Sheffield Jewelry Design Student, Claudia Klug, Danish Clusters

Claudia Klug is finding her stride.  A long-time crafter who made hair accessories and sold them at craft shows for some time now, she has recently taken her hand to the craft of jewelry.   Claudia moves through new techniques with the fresh eyes of a child infused with the diligent and precise execution of the most fastidious of students.   She is deliberate and precise in her technique but expansive and courageous in execution, allowing for play while pushing against the known boundaries of a given technique.  Through this approach there is discovery, and it is precisely this discovery that sets her apart.

Here, desire became the mother of invention as Claudia's foray into jewelry sprung from the oh-so-familiar urge for just the right jewelry to match certain outfits.   With a subtle and refined eye for color and a classic, feminine aesthetic she creates ethereal pieces made from pearls in an array of earthy tones off-set by semi-precious stones.  The Pieces pictured here use pearls and faceted tourmalines with gold filled wire to create a necklace and earring set unique in its silhouette.

When making, Claudia lets her materials guide her, creating what feels natural when she sits down with a drawer of beads and plays with layouts until she comes up with something that she likes.

The most valuable lesson Claudia has gleaned through her work with Sheffield is, “the importance of knowing the right way to do something” which she says has given her “great confidence” in her jewelry making.    Claudia has always loved working with her hands and making crafts, even getting her daughter involved, but the confidence and clarity of direction are new for Claudia.
