Braving the "Open See" at Henri Bendel

Participating in the "Open See", an open call to designers for Henri Bendel, can feel a bit like being adrift on an expanse of ocean, but the rush of anticipation combined with the chance to be seen by Bendel buyers can easily make it worth it!

Hotel Therapy

(Hotel Amiris, Marrakesh, Morocco)One of my main thrills in traveling abroad is the hotel experience.  Sure, tasting new cuisines and meeting the natives is always exciting but I look forward to kicking off my dusty shoes and just relaxing at my lodgings too.  First, there’s the small but important detail – the room is already clean and neat – you don’t have to deal with personal messes.  Then there are the amenities that you may not have in your own home – the powerful jet spray in the shower or the spa toiletries on that dual sink marble vanity. And of course, there’s that menu near your phone – cocktails and midnight snacks ready to be ordered in a moment’s notice.

Besides service amenities, you have the lifestyle aspect.  You may live in a cramped city apartment but for a few days or so, you can experience life in a lakeside rustic cabin or a petite villa by the sea.  Then there are the grand old palaces that some enterprising soul converted into hotel rooms – borrowed luxury to be remembered for a lifetime.

Event Round-Up: Highlights of the 2011 BizBash Expo

Today's torrential rain did not stop planners, vendors, and exhibitors from coming out in force to attend the annual BizBash Expo and Awards on Wednesday at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. A bit waterlogged ourselves, we checked into the bustling conference floor to check out the latest from our favorite vendors, and to gain some insight into industry trends.

Expo guests were immediately greeted by the work of Inflate, a company that provides - unsurprisingly - air-filled temporary structures. Inflate had various caves, rooms, and canopies installed across the floor, including this illuminated cove at the entrance. Otherworldly, and a terrific beacon: in the endless halls of the Javits Center, guides needed only say: head towards the rainbow balloons.

Desert Oasis at Majorelle

Blue Workshop, Majorelle GardensThe deep cobalt blues and contrasting bright lemon yellows that compose the color palette of the Majorelle Gardens appear to have stepped out of a Matisse painting.  Every scene, every vista, everywhere you looked could be the setting of an unforgettable painting.  The Majorelle Gardens were the brainchild of French artist Jacques Majorelle, a contemporary of Henri Matisse.  Majorelle envisioned a green, cool oasis amidst the hot red Marrakesh desert and proceeded to turn a mirage into reality.

The Importance of Play

Remember that fearless approach to exploration that you had when you were little and attempting something new?  You didn’t think about it. You just proudly marched forward.  You know what I’m talking about.  That fearless exploration where you just started something without making judgements.   That initial questioning about whether or not you were finding success with your explorations did not enter into the equation.  Now, think about your approach to something new today.  No, really!   One of the most difficult things to do as an adult is to allow yourself to try new things with the freedom to make mistakes.

Channeling that beautifully naïve approach to tackling something new can be the key that unlocks the door to discovery!  Yeah, sure, you are running the risk of failure. You are also broaching a path of discovery that could uncover what may become your best work!  You won’t know if you don’t just dive in and try.
