I Want One! Cassina Chair

There I was, walking east on East 56th Street, minding my own business, and before me loomed the very tempting window of the Cassina store. I tried not to look, but this chair cried out to me with its siren call. The one in the window was red, but this black-and-white model will do just as well, thank you very much.

The New Museum

This week found me squiring an out-of-town friend, who is a visual artist, around New York. You know, friend comes to town, and you, as the New Yorker, make the great sacrifice of going to galleries and museums, doing those things you would never do otherwise.

So finally I made it to the New Museum, which isn't even that new anymore, having its roots in the New Museum of Contemporary Art, which opened back in 1977. Here is the design note: they were still installing the current exhibit, which shows the work of artists under 30 years of age, but for half-price they let us come in and see about half the exhibit.

One installation, by Michael Blum, titled "Be(com)ing Dutch" represents "an Imagined Future where the museum itself serves as a fictional camp for Israeli refugees" in the year 2048. Complete with unmade cots and graffiti on the walls. It's interesting to look at this both in terms of art and in terms of design. For details on the museum, see http://www.newmuseum.org/

I Want One—Cheope Outdoor Kitchen

You may think of a barbecue grill as a big honking grease-covered hulk that sits on your back porch just waiting to spontaneously combust some evening when the in-laws are over. That's why we want one of these fancy "outdoor kitchens." It even has a sink. All all those cute little places to put things, as finely engineered as the kitchen on a yacht. And probably just as pricey---we haven't been able to track down an exact price, or even a general one. I think this falls into the "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" category. We found this at gizmodo:http://i.gizmodo.com/5182428/

I Want One!—Kitt-In Box

This column is called, "I Want One" but it would be much more accurate to say about this thing that "I Need One." Just look at what I'm up against, here at my home office: 18 pounds of a loving furball. Actually, 37 pounds, as there's another one of these beasties who weighs in at 19 pounds. And they love nothing more than lounging around on the keyboard, which seems to be embedded in the genetic code for felines.
