Super Nova: Sheffield's Jewelry Instructor

We can’t help it: we’ve got to brag about the talents of Nova Colette Bronstein, our firecracker of an instructor in what’s proving to be the best online Course in Jewelry Design ---the one offered here at the Sheffield School, of course! Nova’s work is thoroughly contemporary, wending along the border between the soft and the rough, the sharp-edged and the gently curved.

Photo: Nova ColetteNova’s inspiration often comes from fabrics, and her pieces have the undulations of velvets and lace, yet are crafted from some of the toughest metals to be found. They’re a unique expression of seemingly conflicting elements that nevertheless not only live together in harmony, but which create a dynamic, compelling expression.

Photo: Nova ColetteNova’s fascination with conflicting elements also plays out in her larger art pieces: her steel 2007 installation “Facets” brings the shapes of gemstones, painted peony pink, to a construction site.

Photo: Nova ColetteAs the daughter of two artists, Nova has been making art most of her life; she started her formal training in the late 1990s, working with textiles at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and most recently earning a BFA in Metalsmithing from the State University of New York.

We’re so proud to be working with Nova, that we just had to let you know! You can see more of her work in person at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. One of her latest pieces on display include the silver heart earrings below.

I love the earrings. My daughter is working at creating her own style, although 13. Some don't look at jewelry makers as artists but there is an obvious connection.
Great work.

What can I say? these designs are very glamorous and elegant. I've also been trying to create sites based on fine jewelry and I stumbled upon this one. I was also thinking to gather sites that cater to thie category for my directory. Please do reply if you're interested. Thanks!

I love Bronstein's work. The contrast between the gem stones and the harder edged lines of the silver provide a very dynamic finished effect. I would gladly purchase a piece like this to be admired and as a sound financial investment.

Day in and day out, we're inundated with sounds: at the mall, in the car, at home, even on the street corner. Music is more a part of our daily lives than at any other point in history. Yet we expect people to devote two hours of their day to pure listening, sitting quietly, and politely applauding at the end of a piece. This has its place, but it doesn't have to be the steadfast rule.
I love the accessories.

Nova Colette Bronstein
grew up in the picturesque San Francisco Bay Area.
Being the only daughter of two artists, she
embraced the hand-made from a very early age and has
continued to make jewelry, sculpture, knit items and clothing.
Nova moved to New York in 2006 to pursue her BFA
in metalsmithing at the State University of New York in New Paltz. Nova now makes her own jewelry line in her Brooklyn studio and just completed a residency in the Open Studio program at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
