Start Your Own Rooftop Garden

For those citydwellers who wish for a little green spot to call their own but don't have a backyard, check out this video on how to create a rooftop garden.  It's simple, economical, and easy enough for those who don't have much gardening skills.  And don't miss it - they've installed a bamboo fence around the roof.

Contemporary Furniture Fair--Now Online

In case you missed the 2009 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York last month, don't get your knickers in a twist. You can still see some of the mouth-watering morsels, or at least photos of them, and you can read about all the trends that were on show, including one piece made from seatbelts. Right, like those things in cars.

Check out the article on the fair on Designer Monthly magazine at

Brooklyn Designs

At the 2009 Brooklyn Designs show of contemporary furniture and furnishings, we saw local grown talent present their creative work.  The show was recently held on May 8-10 at the St. Ann's Warehouse in the Dumbo area of Brooklyn.

One of the exhibitors is Ecosystems. They displayed a flexible storage system that can be added on to as needs changed - and all with a simple aluminum clip that holds everything together!  All their furniture is made from sustainable materials. You can visit their site at www.ecosystemsbrand.com.

The Science of Design

Science is finally catching up to what architects and interior designers have known all along....room design can affect your well-being.

In a recent article in Scientific American, researchers have carried out formal scientific investigations on how certain room elements affect mood.  For instance, the height of the room can influence your thinking processes.  Taller-height rooms allows people to think on a larger scale while shorter-height rooms influence people to think of details. The amount of light can also affect your mood and your ability to stay alert.

For more details take a look at the article in Scientific American, "How Room Designs Affect Your Work and Mood".
